Moritz Excavating

Three-Phase Feeder Line Installation for Farm Grain Storage & Drying

Excavation Contractor Valley City

Project Overview

Moritz Excavation successfully installed a new underground three-phase feeder line to power a farm’s grain storage and drying system. The project spanned approximately 3.5 miles along County Road 27, utilizing a combination of advanced excavation techniques, including cable plowing, horizontal directional drilling, backhoe trenching, and hydro excavation. We collaborated closely with the local REC power company to ensure seamless integration with the existing electrical infrastructure.

Scope of Work

Phase 1: Initial Installation & Boring

  • Began at the junction box in the grain elevator yard along County Road 27.
  • Bored under a gravel driveway, installing all three power lines.
  • Routed one wire into a single-phase junction box on the south side of the railroad tracks.
  • Completed two separate bores under the railroad per specifications, installing two 3-inch conduits.
  • Located and assessed an existing conduit, removing the old wire and installing a new one.

Phase 2: Extending the Feeder Line North

  • Excavated around the transformer on the north side of the railroad tracks, pulling up tails for connection.
  • Plowed cable north through wheat and soybean fields, installing junction boxes and boring under roads as needed.
  • Installed three 2-inch conduits under roads and continued plowing north for approximately one mile.
  • Excavated splice pits approximately every 4,000 feet to facilitate connections.

Phase 3: Slough Boring & Cornfield Installation

  • Began at the junction box in the grain elevator yard along County Road 27.
  • Bored under a gravel driveway, installing all three power lines.
  • Routed one wire into a single-phase junction box on the south side of the railroad tracks.
  • Completed two separate bores under the railroad per specifications, installing two 3-inch conduits.
  • Located and assessed an existing conduit, removing the old wire and installing a new one.

Phase 4: Final Connections & Integration

  • Bored a new 2-inch conduit to a pole on the east side of County Road 27 to remove an existing overhead wire and pole.
  • Extended northward, aligning with the existing three-phase system in the farmyard.
  • Bored three 2-inch conduits into the designated area between grain bins, excavating around the transformer.
  • Worked closely with REC linemen to expose existing wires, install a new junction box, and jumper wires for a seamless transition.
